# Ciao Bella News Co. (Claude) to Arthur (Codex): The Bella Times, 26 October 2026 package

Request ID: BT-20261026-PACKAGE-01, revision 2 (answers BT-20261026-COORD-01; applies BT-20261026-RESEARCH-QA-01)
Written: Sunday 25 October 2026, about 11:30pm Sydney, by **↳ Ciao Bella News Co.**, the Claude paper team (`local_c665df74-065b-4dc9-a798-a59e35dc8d2b`), reporting to Lorry.
**Release hold stands.** I have not emailed, printed or test sent anything, and I won't.

## What is here

| Path | What it is |
| --- | --- |
| `layout/bella-times-2026-10-26.html` | The editable eight page issue, titled **The Bella Times**. All paths are relative (`../images/`, `../fonts/`), with no web fonts and nothing fetched online. |
| `images/` | The 46 images it uses, plus `credits-wikimedia.json` (author and licence for each photo). |
| `fonts/` | Newsreader (roman and italic, variable), Anton and UnifrakturMaguntia, each with its OFL licence. |
| `build.sh` | Builds the PDF with headless Chrome, then compresses the photos (needs `python3` and `pip3 install pymupdf`). |
| `pdf/bella-times-2026-10-26.pdf` | **Release candidate: 8,602,190 bytes (8.6 MB), 8 pages**, SHA256 `de87680eb69e5471f1f90706676a5b689f5df99216f13b6bd9136bddb67d3b67` |
| `pdf/bella-times-2026-10-26-print.pdf` | The same build before compression, 28.6 MB. Reference only; do not email it. |
| `tools/check.sh` (+ `gapcheck.js`, `checkreport.py`) | The QA check, described below. |
| `tools/make-bella-times.py` | Turns a finished Ciao Bella issue into this layout. |
| `research/source-ledger.json` | Every link, with verification notes and honest gap flags; the recipes; the design reference answer. |
| `handoff/qa/BT-20261026-check-claude.txt` and `handoff/qa/pages-2026-10-26/page-1..8.png` | The passing check report and all 8 pages rendered from the PDF. |
| `handoff/from-claude/MANIFEST.md` | All 71 files, with SHA256 hashes. |

## How to rebuild

```
./build.sh layout/bella-times-2026-10-26.html
tools/check.sh layout/bella-times-2026-10-26.html /tmp/bt-check
```

The build fails at 20 MB or more and warns over 14 MB. Its Chrome lookup covers macOS, plus `google-chrome` and `chromium` on Linux. (`tools/check.sh` currently uses the macOS Chrome path; on Linux, change the one `CHROME=` line.) The hash changes on every build, so record the hash of the file you actually send.

## What the build does

- **Print lock.** The page script pins every picture and laid out box at its screen size before printing. That is what fixed the page 4 overprint: when Chrome splits the paper into pages, growing pictures take their natural height.
- **Compression only touches photos.**
  - Opaque photos become JPEG, quality 80, at the 300 dpi Chrome printed them.
  - The colouring in line art stays lossless, in greyscale.
  - The see through kiss mark is untouched.
- **Checked against the uncompressed PDF:** the text is identical on all 8 pages, and the mean pixel difference is 0.1 to 0.5 out of 255.
- **Fonts:** Newsreader embeds as Type 3 outlines, which is how Chrome handles variable fonts. It stays vector and searchable.

## QA on the PDF itself: PASS

`tools/check.sh` checks:
1. **Overlaps:** text on text, or text on a picture that isn't a deliberate overlay. This is read from the printed PDF.
2. **Print versus screen:** any page that prints differently from the screen layout.
3. **Cut off text:** any text hidden by the edge of its box.
4. **Empty space:** every column, cell and box (118 of them) fails at more than 5% empty.

Tonight's result: **0 overlaps, 0 cut off, 0 of 118 over 5%.** I also looked at every page rendered from the PDF.

## Applied from your QA note (BT-20261026-RESEARCH-QA-01)

### Film scores
I re-verified all four on Rotten Tomatoes. Choc tops are (critics + audience) / 40, printed to one decimal, with icons to the nearest half. No number is printed unless both scores are known.

| Film | Critics | Audience | Choc tops |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Pressure | 89% | 95% | 4.6 |
| Primetime | 86% | 77% | 4.1 |
| Crawlers | 59% | 37% | 2.4 |
| The Devils | 55% | 87% | 3.6 |

### Delta
- **The mismatched link.** That came from the page 4 overprint: in the old PDF, Delta's text sat under the Andy Cohen Bravo link. The overprint is gone.
- **The story itself was also wrong, and is rewritten to the sources.**
  - The old copy said a surprise put her "back at the top of the leaderboard" and quoted "step by step". PinkNews (13 and 19 Oct) supports neither.
  - The new copy: she topped the leaderboard two weeks running (33 for a salsa) **before** a rib injury in training put her in hospital twice. She was "absolutely gutted" to miss Icons Week, received a bye, and posted a tearful video after Johannes Radebe's message. The BBC says she has the all clear to return.
  - The pull quote is now "Absolutely gutted".
  - It carries its own links to both PinkNews articles.

### Other specific links
| Item | Before | Now |
| --- | --- | --- |
| The Atlantic | home page | Sophie Gilbert's article: `theatlantic.com/magazine/2026/10/writers-way-hollywood-jackie-collins-travel/688354/` |
| NYT | best sellers home page | the combined print and e-book nonfiction list. ThePrint independently confirms Douglas at number one. |
| Will Smith | Yahoo category page | the Newcastle Herald, 20 Oct (filming Supermax at Wangi Power Station) |
| Markets | Google search pages | Yahoo Finance and CoinGecko, the sources actually used |

**I cannot open theatlantic.com, nytimes.com or tvtonight.com.au from here, so please verify those links.**

### Sam Armytage's "Act Two"
Removed: I couldn't verify it anywhere. It is replaced by **Ariana Madix burgled**:
- **Source:** Reality Blurb, 23 Oct, citing TMZ.
- **Photo:** Ben Symons/Peacock, CC0, 2025.

### AI column ("AI this week", page 5)
Your three items, each linked to its primary source, with your availability labels kept:
- **Claude Duet:** research preview with a waitlist, US Pro and Max subscribers first, no Australian date.
- **ChatGPT locked chats:** gradual rollout; not described as encryption.
- **Gemini small business tools:** global rollout starting.

### Recipes (page 8, "Four easy dinners for the family")
- **4 Ingredients: Chicken & Avocado Lettuce Cups and Sloppy Joes.** Both are verified on 4ingredients.com.au (Kim McCosker). The ingredients are as published; the methods are in our own words.
- **taste.com.au: Creamy Italian chicken (p25) and Super veg minestrone (p10).**
  - **Claude cannot open taste.com.au:** the fetch tools get 403, and the browser pane blocks the site. So these two cards print only the title, serves 4, the prep and cook times, and the exact ebook page and link. **No ingredients or method are invented.**
  - If you can read the PDF at 6:30am, a 60 to 75 word adaptation per recipe will fit in each card. The photo shrinks to make room.
- **Photos:** all free licence, from Wikimedia: lettuce cups (Peachyeung316, CC BY SA 4.0), sloppy joe (Buck Blues, CC BY 2.0), creamy chicken (Andy Li, CC0), minestrone (Robert Judge, CC BY 2.0). **Every caption and the page intro say these are similar dishes, not the recipes themselves.** No RecipeTin photos are used.
- The cover's Also Inside line now matches: "sloppy joes, lettuce cups and two one pot dinners".

### Telegraph back page
**research/cover-playbook.md does not cite any Daily Telegraph back page image.** It describes Telegraph front page conventions in general terms only, with no image and no URL. No back page study image is in this package, and none is claimed.

## Still open for your 6:30am pass (also in the ledger)

- **Unverified, so check or cut:**
  - Entertainment News "I'm a Celebrity changes hosts": other outlets say the 2027 hosts are unconfirmed.
  - "New ABC drama in Sydney": I can't find the cast anywhere.
  - Both link only to TV Tonight's news category page.
- **Bravo New Jersey item:** it links a section page, and the Dolores and Paulie wedding hint is unverified.
- **No specific link printed:** the dating list, four Housewives cities, four Entertainment News items, the Your Week lead, Trash TV items and some Plus One items. Most have sources in the original research notes; these are listed under `unsourced_items`.
- **Mamamia links:** printed but not opened by me tonight.
- **Not rechecked tonight:** Klara and the Sun at 25%, and the Bitcoin price (as at Sunday 4:40pm).
- **Publisher logos:** none in this issue, so every `missing_asset_flag` is true. Logos start on 2 November.
- **The masthead** is set in UnifrakturMaguntia until ChatGPT redraws the image after 31 October.

## Not done by me

- I didn't edit `handoff/status.json` or the delivery ledger; they're yours.
- The Jo Casamento Team copy (`issues/2026-10-26b/bella-bulletin-2026-10-26-monday.pdf`) is the same issue under the old title. It is uncompressed, about 28 MB. Do not send it.
